碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 國民教育研究所 / 92 / The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the physical fitness of the obese children after undergoing 12 weeks walking. The subjects who had agreed to participate in the study were defined by BMI test as obese children (boy: BMI≧22.9; girl: BMI≧22.3) and taken from the fifth grade (age 10.67 yr. old) of Hai Dian Elementary School in Tainan City. Twenty-seven children (21 boys and 6 girls) were assigned into the experimental group and thirty-two (19 boys and 13 girls) were into the control group. The experimental group underwent a gradual training of 40 minutes walking exercise 5 times a week in the morning while the control group read books in the class during the same period. Before and after the study, all subjects underwent the tests of BMI, muscle strength (standing jump), muscle endurance (one minute sit-up), Flexibility (sit and reach) and cardio-vascular endurance (800 m run). Before study, all testing items between the experiment and control group were non-significant. It was showed they had same physical fitness level at the beginning. After 12 weeks of training, all testing items in the experiment group were significantly difference between pre-test and post-test. The main findings of the study showed that the walking exercise is a suitable exercise for the obese children and can efficiently improve their physical fitness. Suggestions for further researches include:
1. How long the valid period of weight loss could last for the obese children undergoing the walking exercise?
2. Future studies can incorporate the independent variables such as behavior change, cognition on nutrition, food selection, food intake, parental help, and the effects of the lifestyle change on the obese children.
