The Study of the Visual Image Design of the Commuity Empowerment Planning--Take the Restoration of the traditional Streets in Jhong Harbor, Jhunan for Example / 社區營造規劃之視覺形象設計研究--以竹南中港老街再造為例

The study is based on “The Community Empowerment Project of the New Hometown” in the “Challenge 2008 — National Development Plan”, put forward by Executive Yuan in 2002. It’s written on the principle of adhering to the basic idea of planning green silicon island, developing the key value of humanism and everlasting development, and bringing out the greatest benefit of the country’s limited resources.
In the restoration project of the traditional streets in Jhong Harbor, Jhunan Chen, the layout and design for the plane and vertical on the streets are in the charge of the Miaoli County Community designer. The author performs the development and introduction of visual image; moreover, he means to set up “Jhong Harbor Restoration Association”, hoping to strengthen the residents’ awareness to make Jhong Harbor Community renewed in appearance, the community awareness formed spiritually, extra values increased in industries through the combination with culture and the community endowed the energy to develop forever.
The author was born and brought up in Jhong Harbor. He is participating in the restoration of the community in his hometown. Besides expecting to preserve the traditional culture, he is also in hope of keeping the local traditional industries alive and increasing the opportunities of employment to urge the native youngsters who moved to other areas to make the days off to return to their hometown to work part time and restore the past golden time of Jhong Harbor. As to the planning of visual image, the author sticks to not only the sense of beauty, but also the principle of taste and style, He tries to create a “distinguishing system” that really stands for the image of Jhong Harbor Community.
The study is divided into 3 parts — the exploration of documents, on-the-spot surveys and interviews, and the creative study. Through the interviews with the local people and field surveys, the author pictures the olden-day splendor of the traditional streets and obtains the creative elements and ideas.
The suggestions in the follow-up study are as follows:
1. Industrial culture: establishing a museum for paper money, preserving and recording the process or tools of manufacturing paper money, sorting and publicizing the prints and auspicious patterns on the paper money.
2. Local activities: combining with national X-rated historic site Cihyu Temple and holding cultural activities, writing history for traditional houses, tramping the traditional streets etc. to offer the younger generations the chances to realize the culture of their hometown.
3. Cultural space: making use of humanities, history resources to highlight local folk activities and properly exercising the function of visual image to present the special features of the community.
4. Humanities education: taking advantage of public places in Jhong Harbor, such as the meeting rooms in Cihyu Temple and activity center for community residents, to offer artistic and cultural courses, train local tour guides and fulfill the community spirit.
5. Recreation and traveling: combining with local popular scenic spots, such as Longfeng Temple in Houcuo, mangroves in Wenzitou, protected areas for wild birds, forest resorts, Longfeng fishing harbor, Ciding sea water bath field, matching with local literature and history explanation to offer recreational and profound trips and attract tourists from outside areas.
