Economic Analysis of Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) Farming in Taiwan / 台灣牡蠣養殖產業之經濟分析

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 92 / Oyster culture is a special industry in aquaculture and it is the biggest part of bivalve culture in Taiwan. Since, Taiwan became a member of WTO in 2002, the aquaculture products were deeply affected by the imported fishery products. To decrease the impact brought by the imported products and to give information to the government, this study conducted an analysis on the production economy of its aquaculture industry and the market of its products.
Previous data show a dramatically fluctuation of revenue in per hector oyster culture. It was caused from the uncertain cultured area and different culture methods. This study compared stocking hector, stocking strings, stocking shells and harvest weight as a production unit for production economy. The results showed that the shell is the best unit for the production economy of oyster culture. Raft culture had the highest cost among the four type of oyster culture but it had the best operation efficiency. The result of Cobb-Douglas production function indicated that production of thousand shells was the most significant factor affecting the production cost.
This research also observed the instability of oyster price for farmers mainly caused by the seasonal fluctuation of oyster production. However, in spite of the low farmer price, the market price did not decrease because it was controlled by the brokers who caused the high marketing margin. The government should seek strategy to preserve the benefits of farmers and consumers and to increase the compatibility of oyster farmers in Taiwan as a part of WTO.
