The determination of container terminal handling capacity and operation systems / 貨櫃碼頭能量推估及作業系統選擇之研究

博士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 河海工程學系 / 92 / Container terminals serve as connecting points in the entire intermodal transport system, must provide sufficient handling capacity and act as a buffer for changing mode between sea and road/rail, or for transshipment of containers between ships, in order to smoothly facilitate the flow of containers. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the terminal capacities, such as berth handling capacity and container yard handling capacity, and then apply the results on terminal operation systems selection.
This study investigated the degrees of interference for multiple cranes that work simultaneously by using actual harbor logs and operational data relate to ships and cranes operation in Port of Kaohsiung. And estimated the number of effective cranes equipped on the quayside by adopting simulation programmer. The results revealed that there is nearly no mutual interference between cranes, as long as the number of allocated cranes was no more than the truck lanes under each crane. The effective number of cranes equipped on the apron could be adopted in berth capacity calculation practically. Besides, a comparison of container handling capacity on the basis of different handling systems, yard sizes and crane characteristics is presented. The author first examined the layout of container terminals in the Taiwan ports based on discussions with experts from different consultant companies and terminal operators. Then, a useful general equation was derived and proposed to calculate the total number of twenty-foot container ground slots (TGS), or the area requirement per TGS, for different yard sizes with different handling systems based on different equipment dimensions. The aforementioned results could be very useful for the port planners to shorten the process of decision-making on choosing a suitable handling technology that meets the annual throughput demand at the preliminary planning stage.
Then a handling cost comparison indicator, Ri/j, is proposed to make cost comparisons between these handling systems in order to find the least - cost technique. Since the value of each variable in the cost function is not fixed, a sensitivity analysis is also presented in order to analyze the effect of each parameter on the process of mode selection. The methodology proposed in this study can be very useful in evaluating and implementing the container handling technology selection, and, thus, is anticipated to make considerable contribution to the planning of container terminal design.
