Wan-an Island of Penghu County hosts a refuge site for the nesting green turtle. However, the illumination facilities near part of the nesting beaches do create the light pollution, and influence the nesting behavior of sea turtles. The light intensity loggers were used in the nesting seasons of 2002 and 2003 to recorded the background light intensity on each nesting beach, the light intensity during the emerge, turning, digging, nesting and descent phases on the dark and exposed beaches. Results showed that the light pollution on Wan-an Island did influence the nesting behavior of the green turtle directly. It frightened the turtles from emergence and decrease the emerged times on the exposed beaches. It also forced the turtles to turn more times on the beaches, moved towards the directions of low light intensities in the mixed crawl pattern, started to dig her body pit on the open beaches, the pits were shallower, and no nesting activities were observed. Thus, the light pollution in the refuge site had a significant impact to the nesting behavior of the green turtles. It is thus recommend to the relevant authorities that a proper management plan for the illumination facilities near the nesting beaches is desperately needed to improve the light pollution problem on the refuge site. Thus, the green turtles will have safer nesting beaches on Wan-an Island.
