Studies on reducing the fishery loss caused by cetacean in Taiwan / 台灣沿近海漁業減少海豚危害之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 92 / Abstract

The conservation of cetaceans in Taiwan was strictly regulated recently. However, the conflict between the fishery loss and cetacean protection keeps growing. Fishery loss caused by cetaceans has often been complained by fisherman, such as stealing fish, frightening fish group, damaging fishing gear, and interfering fishing operation. To reduce the fishery loss due to dolphin and protect cetaceans from being caught, this study applied the bio-acoustic method to expel cetaceans from fishing gears. Pingers with 10kHz sounds, partly similar to killer whales sound, were attached in longline and torch light net. The test results showed that pingers were effective to deter bottlenose dolphins from stealing fish during fishing operation. As well as, it is not significant that these pingers influence the target catch.
