The purpose of this research was to understand the relationship between explanatory style, life adjustment and learning performance by developing the explanatory style inventory, which was revised from the attributional style questionnaire proposed by Peterson et al.(1982), and checked the inventory’s validity and reliability.
According to the purpose, we conducted three studies. The subjects of study 1 were 943 university graduated cadets. After the exploratory factor analysis, the four dimensions of the scale were “positive events : optimism explanatory style”, “positive events : pessimism explanatory style”, ”negative events : optimism explanatory style”, ”negative events : pessimism explanatory style”. The Cronbach’s α was from .54 to .77. Concurrent criteria-related validity found explanatory style and life adjustment and learning performance had significant correlation.
The subjects of study 2 were 343 college graduated cadets and 1,736 fresh cadets. The result of confirmatory factor analysis proved the explanatory style inventory model. The correlation between explanatory style and the fresh cadets’ life adjustment (after four months) was positive significantly. And the correlation between explanatory style and the fresh cadets’ physical training grades (after a semester) was significant.
Study 3 took 107 marine corps volunteer soldiers as the research subjects. Concurrent criteria-related validity revealed that explanatory style and life adjustment (the challenge setback; the interpersonal adaption) had significant correlation. Predictive criteria-related validity found that the correlation between explanatory style and life adjustment (after four months) had no significance, but, the explanatory style and learning performance (professional grades only) had positive correlation.
