The purpose of this study was to examine the current situation and effects of pilot mentor teacher program for elementary schools in Taipei, Taiwan, ROC. In order to accomplish above purpose, questionnaire survey, and semi-structured interview were conducted in this study.
Survey questionnaires were sent to all mentor teachers (N=55), all protégés (N=55), and all school administrators (N=21). An overall response rate of 84.2% was achieved, and the valid rate was 99.2%. Moreover, in behalf of obtaining more information, 8 mentor teachers, 8 protégés, and 4 school administrators were interviewed.
From the findings of this study, the positive impacts of the pilot mentor teacher program were: (1) Mentor teachers and protégés were satisfied with their interaction. However, they weren’t satisfied with their own performance very much; (2) Video recordings would benefit the instructional growth of protégés; (3) Overall results indicated that the functions of the program were highly recognized by all subjects; (4) After participating the program, most of the mentor teachers and protégés felt that they were much more aware of their own teaching behaviors, were much more active at professional growth activities, had good interaction with their colleagues, and became more confident; (5) A lot of subjects believed that the program could increase the retention rate of good teachers; (6) Most of the subjects represented that they were willing to continue their relationships; (7) On the whole, most of the subjects were satisfied with the effects of pilot mentor teacher program in their schools.
Based on the research findings, recommendations for authorities of educational administration, teacher training organization, school administrators, teachers, and for further study were proposed to improve the implementation of the program.
