The Research of Lin Hai-Ying and Her Essays / 林海音及其散文研究

碩士 / 臺北市立師範學院 / 應用語言文學研究所 / 92 / Companied that the voice of caring the local has been heard recently, Taiwan literature has been discussed and emphasized seriously and become a new important issue in research field. Based on the whole process of the development of Taiwan literature, researchers tend to focus on only a certain period of Japan occupation and ignore other prosperous literature phenomena. On the other hand, the novel gets most attentions of researchers; other literary genres still need to be explored. Thus, this paper focuses on essays in 50s and 60s when the essay genre is well-produced both in quality and quantity.
With the consideration of time era and genre, Lin Hai-Ying is a remarkable individual for research in essay works of 50s and 60s. Due to the transformation of official language in post-war period, female mainlander writers were given the opportunity to compete with male writers with their language advantage. Among those female writers, Lin Hai-Ying is the most brilliant star who had most complete works and experiences. In her writing career, Lin started at 1949, published her first essay collection Evergreen Tree in 1955 and never stopped until she was sick in her eighties in 1998. Lin’s clear and refreshing style is quite different from the preaching anti-communist trend populated in 50s; it touched and moved many sorrowfully home-sick souls. In Lin’s editing and publishing career, she had been the reporter of World Daily, editor of Chinese Daily, chef editor of United Daily News Supplement, literature editor of Literature Star magazine, chef editor of Pure Literature monthly magazine, and the publisher of Pure Literature. She was very generous to offer opportunities to new writers and helped to make good foundation of Taiwan modern literature. Researches about Lin Hai-Ying have not been completed yet; they are single essays scattered in many magazines and journals or analysis of a certain work without comprehensive systematic understanding. Thus, this paper focuses on Lin Hai-Ying and her essays in order to gain a completely comprehensive and organized exploration and research. This paper includes six chapters:
First chapter is the introduction which explains the research motivations, literature review, research method, content and goal in order to sketch out the structure of the paper.
Second chapter is the background and biography of Lin Hai-Ying. The unique style of Lin’s literary writing is seriously related to her childhood and background; almost all her works could be traced back to her real experiences. It is necessary to understand her life then to study her creative world. This chapter is separated into several sections by time period based on Lin’s important events in life. They are Background, Childhood, Romance in Distance, A decade of United News Daily Supplement, Spread of Dreams, and Passing of the Star. Each section’s aim is to trace the linkages between remarkable events, individuals and Lin’s works. The effects reveal on Lin’s writing are also explored and to show the colorful life of Lin’s.
Third chapter is about the creative world of Lin. Based on her career of writing and editing, to study the effects on modern literature movement. Based on her ideas and attitude toward literature and literary criticism, Lin’s theory and insistence on creative writing are explored. This chapter sketches out the spiritual aspect of Lin’s creation and the souls deep inside her works.
Fourth chapter is the genre of Lin’s essay topics. In order to show the unique style of Lin’s writing, genre, style and quantity of works are all taken into consideration of classification. The conclusion is that there are five most frequent topics of her essay which are sorted into Peking Scenery, Taiwan Features, Travel Experience, Criticism and Review and Nostalgia.
Fifth chapter is the art analysis of Lin’s essays which look through her works in wild perspective and in details. The skills of denotation, connotation, structure, rhetoric and diction are all examined. From main directions to slight details, this chapter would show the unique style of Lin’s essays.
Sixth chapter is the conclusion. There are five main achievements of Lin’s essays. First, her works reveal the nostalgia for her second hometown, Peking, which is the most attractive. Living in Peking influences Lin a lot and she expresses the deep feelings through simple words which have moved many readers. Second, Lin’s active and passionate characters construct her essays a peaceful world and provide readers’ emotions a place to rest. Third, Lin writes with enthusiasm and her works honestly reveal her heart which helps readers realize underlying meanings and the wisdom deep inside. Fourth, Lin has been eagerly strived for the freedom of writers’ souls and the autonomy of creativity and insisted her literature claims. She applies her literature ideas in her works practically and at the same time, forms the complete and clear style. Fifth, Lin’s essay writings start from daily life, through the surface of nostalgia and to the deepest, purest meaning of life. Thus, her works are touching and universal and also companied with poetic art style. Lin’s works have enriched the development of modern essays in Taiwan.
