Fish refugee behavior as biosensorFor Hazardous inflow Detection / 毒物監測魚箱警示指標之建立

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 水利及海洋工程學系專班 / 93 / The water company of Taiwan has used local fishes raised in a special designed fish tank to monitor that whether the raw water is safely obtained from water intakes. By leading the raw water into the test water tank and continuously monitors the fishes, it is expected that abnormal behaviors or even dieing of the fishes would reflect the toxicity pollution of the intake water. Our previous study found that the flow in the special fish tank had several stagnation points and these locations became refuge area for the fishes if there were a toxic inflow. The schooling of the fishes in the stagnation points was not treated as an abnormal behavior so the monitor system in many cases failed to reflect the toxic raw water inflow.

This study is thus to produce a warning index based on the number of the schooling of the fishes in the stagnation points. The fish tank is divided into 9 sections and the number of fishes appear in each section is recorded when there are normal and toxic inflows. The polluted inflow is formed by using SDS and NACL at concentrations of 10000 PPM as the toxicant. Video recorders were used for the observations. Observations for normal and toxic inflows were carried for the period of 10 weeks and 10 test cases respectively. The number of fishes appears in refugee and non-refugee sections for toxic and normal inflows are normalized and their ratios become indexes of warning. The constructed indexes are tested for different set of fishes and show that the index(for zebra fish>4 or redsword fish>6 is the condition of warning)can confidently reflect the toxic inflow. This proves the concept that to detect the fish schooling in the refugee zone is a capable way of monitoring toxic inflow and is possible for other applications.
