in Dong-Gang and Xi-Gang
Abstract
The Wang-Ye Boat is a prop for religious rite and has its historical story . In earlier years in Mainland China, some area was attacked by the plague and many people died of the deadly disease. People asked for shaman’s help to held a religious ceremony to banish the plague ghost and pray for safety and health. It was caught and put into a strawy boat (or paper boat). People put the boat in the river and the plague followed the boat drifting to the immeasurable sea. Thus, people in the plagued area would recover from the disease. The whole process is the original rite about The Wang-Ye Boat releasing activities. Nowadays, The Wang-Ye Boat is made of wood or bamboo knitting and glued with paper. The releasing activities of The Wang-Ye Boat are divided into two different ways; one is the so-called “Flame Release” and the other is “Water Discharing”. 1(1) In recent years, the “ Flame Release” way has been widely followed in many areas of Taiwan. Despite of many different legends about The Wang-Ye Boat, the purpose of its religious rite, driving away the plague, is always mentioned.
The purpose of the study aims to analyze and sort a comparison on The Wang-Ye Boat craft in Dong-Gang and in Xi-Gang , especially focus on the dimensions of color painting and shipbuilding techniques. The Dong-Long Temple in Dong-Gang and the Ching-An Temple in Xi-Gang are both famous for the Wang-Ye Boat releasing activities. Dong-Gang being a seaside community is famous for his fishing and shipbuilding industry. That the enormous Wang-Ye Boat has street tour in the religious parade becomes an awesome and attractive scene. Xi-Gang’s Ching-An Temple, upon taking over the Wang-Ye Boat releasing activities from the Guma Temple, has had the broad religious rites covering more than 90 towns and villages. The Boat is smaller than the Dong-Long’s. These two Boats are made of wood and colored. However, they have manifestly various characteristics in the shipbuilding techniques and color painting with different craftsmanship in these tow regions.
