Economic Analysis of Perch Farming in Taiwan / 台灣鱸魚養殖產業經濟分析

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 93 / Taiwan perch aquaculture industry crashed because of overproduction in 1996, since then the fish price has not returned to the highest level in previous. Although perch is not expensive anymore, it is accepted by the normal family. The supply and demand present a steady state in local market in recent years. For making profit from perch culture, the cost structure is important to the farmers; for sustainable development, the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of the industry are always need to be considered by policy maker. Barramundi and Japanese seaperch are two important perches cultured in Taiwan, and most of them are monoculture. During 2001 and 2003, the cost structure between Barramundi and Japanese seaperch are almost the same. Total operating cost of Japanese seaperch is higher than that of Barramundi, because Japanese seaperch takes longer time to reach market size. The investment return rate of Barramundi is unstable, but it is still higher than that of Japanese seaperch. On contrast, the investment return rate of Japanese seaperch has been increased in recent years. Grouper’s operating cost is the highest followed by perch, tilapia and milkfish. For all four spices, the highest operating cost is feed, followed by seed, water and electricity cost. Although the perch’s main market is in Taiwan, its investment return rate in near 2 years override grouper, followed by tilapia and milkfish.
Through analysis of the life cycle, it is indicated that perch aquaculture industry goes into the second life circle. Whether the industry continues growing or loses the dominant situation, it depends on the development of other cultured spices. Right now, its price is accepted by the consumers, but still competed by other products. In future, grouper export market must face the competition from China and southern east countries. If the total yield of grouper is oversupply, the price will go down and replace perch in local market. Milkfish and tilapia industry faced difficulties of the balance between production and marketing recent years. As the entry barrier of seapearch culture is low, milkfish and tilapia producer might switch to seaperch culture. Consequently over production of seaperch might occur in future. This circumstance will has impact on the benefit of seaperch farmers.
