This study based on cusk-eels of Taiwan region. Fishes of Ophidiidae is chief part of ophidiid fishes. They have 48 genera and 218 species around the world and distributed widely. Habitats of cusk-eels are from epipelagic region to 8000 m depths. They are mainly benthopelagic at bathyal and abyssal depths.
Our specimens mainly collected by R/V Fishery Researcher I., R/V Ocean researcher I and commercial bottom trawl from the waters in east and southwest. A part of specimens are borrowed from some museum’s early collections. I count 17 genera and 28 species of all ophidiid fishes from Taiwan, included 3 new record genera and 4 new record species. All identified and described species contained: Brotula multibabarta (Brotulinae), Ophidion muraenolepis (Ophidiinae), and species of Neobythitinae which included all new record species; 1 species in Acanthonus, 4 species in Bassozetus, 1 species in Bathyonus, 2 species in Dicrolene, 2 species in Glyptophidium, 1 species in Holcomycteronus, 1 species in Homostolus, 1 species in Hoplobrotula, 1 species in Lamprogrammus, 1 species in Luciobrotula, 2 species in Monomitopus, 5 species in Neobythites, 2 species in Porogadus, 1 species in Sirembo and 1 species in Xyelacyba.
This study also discuss the taxonomic history of ophidiid fishes in Taiwan, key to diagnostic, distribution, synonym, remark and photographs and pictures of whole fish in left side and some important characters.
