In recent years, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been focused on improving the health of human, such as preventing myocardial infarction and artery sclerosis etc. cardiovascular diseases, and playing an very important role in the growth and development of the animal. The purpose of this study was using marine microalgae Isochrysis sp. CCMP 1324 rich in PUFA, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to take place the fish oil in fodder, and observing the change of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids content, the influence of growing up, and the correlation between marine microalgae Isochrysis sp. and the PUFA formation during cultivation of juvenile hybrid tilapia, and then comprehensively assessing the feasibility of replacing fish oil with marine microalgae Isochrysis sp. in fodder for cultivating freshwater fish. Finally, it was used as foundation to develope the rich in DHA fodder when Isochrysis sp. was mass produced. Results indicated that juvenile hybrid tilapia’s weight gain (WG), feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) etc. growth indexes were found increase with the Isochrysis sp. level increase. There no significant differences (p>0.05) in hepatosomatic index (HSI) and markedly higher than other groups in each growth indexes were observed among the diet with 4% Isochrysis sp. for 8 weeks. It shows the fodder with marine microalgae Isochrysis sp. CCMP 1324 can promote the growth and development of juvenile hybrid tilapia. In addition, both hepatic and muscle DHA concentration of juvenile hybrid tilapia were found increase with Isochrysis sp. level increase in dietary during a short time. Moreover, the fatty acid desaturase activity of cultivating fish liver was very weaker than microalgae Isochrysis sp. and no significant difference in each group of tested fish were observed. Therefore, it was speculated that tilapia might effectively utilize and accumulate the DHA offered from Isochrysis sp. in organ.
