The influence of water quality of the Tanshui Estuary by Shy-Tzyg-Tour event in July, 2004: the nutrient study / 93年7月獅子頭事故影響淡水河海域水質之探討-以營養鹽為例

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋科學系 / 93 / Abstract
More than 400 tons of untreated sewage overflowed to the mid-estuary of the Tanshui Estuary in July 19, 2004 because the pumping system at the Shy-Tzyg-Tour mid-way station was out of order. One month later of this event, a typhoon invaded Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of water quality of the Tanshui Estuary by this event by means of the nutrient study and to understand the dilution capacity of the storm after the typhoon. This knowledge can give us the information of how deleterious of the water quality, and seek the strategy to improve the situation.

The water qualities of the Tanshui Estuary after the event were as follows: salinity,5.6-33.3 ; pH,7.74-8.23; dissolved oxygen,1.59-6.12 ml/L; total P,0.57-21.36 嵱; silicate,4.67-219.39 嵱; nitrate,0.17-2.77 嵱; nitrite,0.04-1.44 嵱 ; and ammonia,< 0.1-287.28 嵱。The maximum concentrations of phosphate、organic P and ammonia, and the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen appeared at the Shy-Tzyg-Tour station along the estuarine axis. The anthropogenically chemical constitutes within the Tanshui Estuary have been significantly flushed out by storm after the typhoon invasion. The maximum concentrations of total P and ammonia were less than 3.5 嵱 and 60 嵱, respectively, in the upper estuary. However, a higher concentration of ammonia still observed at the Tanshui mass-transport station, suggesting that there had sources of ammonia input, probably from the nearby domestic discharge or from the decomposition of organic material under the anoxic sediment. The concentrations of nutrients, except total P and ammonia which showed nearly conservative distribution, observed in July 22, 2004 generally decreased with seaward. In contrast, the distributions of nutrients found in August 31 were rather scatter, indicating that not only the mixing of river and sea waters but the other mechanisms also influenced the distributions of nutrients within the estuary.
