Recently, with advanced technology and convenient transportation, it stimulates the development of agriculture, industry, business and service industry and also rising national income. Marine tourism has become one of the main recreation style choices for people. In order to promote the development of fishing village, increase economic benefit and fishermen welfare, many low utilization of traditional fishing harbors are transformed to leisure harbors. In developing multifunctional harbors, the most popular and promising harbor is Danshui Fishermen Wharf in Taiwan. Therefore, this study examines the recreational value and tourists’ experience in developing recreational fishery of Danshui Fishermen Wharf, and discusses its development potential and economic benefits.
The study contains two kinds of research methods: one is important performance analysis (IPA), conferring the importance and satisfaction of tourists’ experience at Danshui Fishermen Wharf to understand the overall riches of tourism environment in this area; the other one is contingent value method (CVM) to measure the willingness to pay (WTP) of maintaining environment resources. Survey results show “preserve the rim of harbor’s ecological environment” …etc. items can maintain their strength, and “the hygiene and selectivity of food plaza”…etc. items must be improved. Besides, in average, tourist is willing to pay NT$33 entrance fee to preserve the environment to sustainable development. The estimated total potential entrance fee is NT$72 million dollars in 2004. Finally, this study provides suggestions to related institutes in developing, planning and managing the leisure and recreational activities at Danshui Fishermen Wharf.
