Temporal and spatial dynamics of zooplankton and copepod communities in the Tan-Shui estuary, northern Taiwan were examined based on the field samplings conducted between September 2003 and August 2004. Dominant taxonomic groups of zooplankton in this region were Copepoda, Chaetognatha, Crab zoea, Planktonic mollusca, Barnacle nauplius, Echinodermata larva, Appendicularia and Lamellibranchia. The most dominant, group however, was the Copepoda, accounting for more than 50% of the zooplankton in all seasons. Four orders, 13 families and 18 genera of copepods were found in this estuary. Paracalanus, Oithona, Euterpina and Temora were the most abundant genera. Zooplankton abundance increases from March when seasonal temperature also increases. The abundance remained high during spring and summer, and started to decrease in October when seasonal temperature also dropped. The lowest abundance was found in February. Richness and diversity indices estimated for zooplankton and copepod genera were found to be higher during spring and fall, and lower during winter, Multivariate analyses based on the cluster and nonparametric multi-dimensional scaling also identified two groups roughly corresponding to “winter-early spring” and “late spring-summer-fall” seasons for both zooplankton and copepod genera. Seasonal temperature apparently plays an important role for zooplankton and copepod communities in this region. While the dissolved oxygen may not be a limiting factor for zooplankton distribution of this region, the tidal (or salinity) effect may be important at a diurnal scale, but its role remained to be quantified. In addition, comparisons between our results and early studies, as well as a potential of estuary as a nursery ground, and the shift of fishing ground for larval fish fishery in the region are also discussed.
