Maritime transportation acts as an important role in international trade, especially liner shipping, which usually provides stable services with fixed date weekly service. In order to ensure their service levels, many shipping liner shipping companies employ chartered in container ships to constitute one part of their fleet. Under such a circumstance, it seems necessary to explore the container ship time chartering practices as well as their legal problems arising from respective time charter party. This thesis discusses the nature of liner shipping, and the legal issues relating to liner shipping time charter party. It also analyzes and compares the major clauses of NYPE’93 time charter and BOXTIME. This thesis examines typical judgments for further discussion of the legal problems concerning container ship time charter party. It aims to clarify the rights, responsibilities and liabilities in connection with liner shipping time chartering, and provide useful reference to liner shipping companies.
