Studies on GnRH and Aromatase Expression in the Scleractinia Coral, Euphyllia ancora / 腎形真葉珊瑚的促性腺激素釋放素與環化酵素之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 93 / In earlier studies, we have already confirmed the presence of estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), aromatase and gonadotropin-releasing hormone-like (irGnRH) in the scleractinian coral. These materials undergo periodic changes with reproduction season. In the present study, analysis of aromatase activaty in coral, and immunohistochemistry were conducted to detecte the position of irGnRH in coral. With this information, a better understanding of the possible regulatory mechanism of reproductive hormones in coral can be obtained. The results of this showed that aromatase activaty of the female coral (Euphyllia ancora) increased apparently during reproduction season (from January of 2004 to May), and decreased rapidly after spawning (June of 2004). With the advancement in coral gonad development, aromatase activity was found to increase, suggesting that aromatase activity maybe related to gonad development of coral. Treatment of corals with LHRH agonist for 15 days from March resulted in an obvious increase in the oocyte diameter. Thus, LHRH agonist can increase the development of coral oocyte. Immunohistochemistry studies with sbGnRH antibody, revealed that irGnRH in the coral tissue were distributed in the mesenteries, inferring that it could be related to reproduction. In this study, HCG and PGF2α of 2 different doses were used to induce spawning in coral, but with no success. Treatment of the coral with LHRH agonist, T, E2, and HCG during non-spawning season, resulted in no significant difference in gonad development between the treated and control groups.
These findings indicate that sex steroids, aromatase, and irGnRH exist in coral. The concentrations were dependent on reproduction season, gonad development and the regulatory mechanisms of reproduction. So we presume that the reproductive system in corals is similar to that of vertebrates.
