碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 輪機工程系 / 93 / The main purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of TBT carryover through ballast water. Experimental results showed that the TBT concentrations in ballast water of a container ship were within the range of 17 ng/L to 93 ng/L. No TBT was detected in ballast water collected from three other ships. This was explained by the effect of methods and positions of loading/unloading. Based upon the results of this study, it was very likely that ship ballasting could be one of the causes of TBT contamination. It was estimated that the amount of TBT introduced into Taiwan water through deballasting could be as high as 18 Kg every year, based upon an average TBT concentration of 50 ng/L. TBT concentrations in water sampled from five international ports in Japan were within the range of 22 ng/L to 56 ng/L. The problem of these ports acting as both sources and sinks of TBT through ballasting was significant.
