Abstract

The current research integrates biodiversity with the “Diverse Organism” unit of the fifth grade Nature and Technology field. It aims at exploring the elementary students’ learning achievements and attitude changes toward the nature conservation by means of the outdoor teaching at the Taiwan University ecological pond and Fu Garden.

At first, the researcher investigates the ecological resources around Taiwan University Ecological Pond and Fu Garden in order to design a teaching material. The researcher then developed a constructive outdoor teaching model based on Driver and Oldham’s five phases of the constructive teaching model. Finally, the researcher utilized a self-made “Fifth Graders’ Cognitive Test of Biodiversity” to measure students’ cognitive achievements in learning the biodiversity concepts. While teaching, the researcher collected and analyzed qualitative data to scrutinize the students’ changes in terms of their thoughts, attitudes and behaviors.

The research findings show:
1. Taiwan University Ecological Pond and Fu Garden are appropriate places for teachers to do outdoor teaching due to the abundant ecological resources, the ease of access and the comfortable as well as secure environment.
2. This research establishes constructive model of outdoor teaching, and teaches through five phases: (1) determine the research approach. (2) define the questions through guided discussions. (3) explore the outdoors by groups. (4) restructure students’ opinions. (5) implement the new ideas.
3. By means of the pre and post test of the “Fifth Graders’ Cognitive Test of Biodiversity”, t test shows significant differences among the classes and between genders. It shows that the students’ cognition of biodiversity improves significantly.
4. The qualitative analysis shows that students’ attitude toward nature conservation improved significantly due to the biodiversity learning.

Based on the research outcomes, the researcher provides the following recommendations:
1. The current teaching material and the curriculum guidelines need to be modified, and to reinforce biodiversity education for elementary students.
2. Teachers need to improve their understandings of the biodiversity, and the authorities need to provide the in-service education of biodiversity.
3. Teachers and students should be encouraged to do the long- term ecological observations in their own campus and make it a place to learn about biodiversity.
