The Balance and Unbalance Of Characters In Fantasy Literature:The Earthsea Books And His Dark Materials Trilogy / 奇幻文學角色的失衡與平衡—以《地海》和《黑暗元素》三部曲為例

碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 兒童文學研究所 / 95 / In fantasy literature, the adventure of young main characters usually shows a certain common mode. In this article, the author attempts to present different styles of writing as in The Earthsea Books and His Dark Materials Trilogy to be the major norm of text. By citing three stages: “away—disequilibrium”, “adventure—accommodation”, and “home—equilibration”, this article explores how this common mode of a specific adventure describes the mental change of young characters from away home to returning home. Meanwhile, it states whether these stages reflect the psychological development process of Adolescence.
The research finds that the adventure mode Fantasy Literature elaborates seems to be the same “rite of passage” that the young character in the book shares with teenage readers. The result states the process of main characters’ finding the way to independence, the metal stages of their balancing act to accommodation, and the possible development course of their fulfillment to self-identity in teenage hood. It proves that Fantasy Literature provides a mental rehearsal for thinking. Through reading, it attempts to make teenagers gradually learn to adapt the surrounding change, increase the ability of adaptation of coping with negative events, integrate the clashes both from inward and outward as they recall the pureness of Pre-Industrial and degrade the darkness of modern society.
Though Fantasy Literature creates an amazing frontier as a stage, and provides imagination as means, it offers positive imagination emphasizing that men cannot indulge themselves in illusions but expect men to build up a better world by positively using the essential pureness to find back the original look and life of men.
