碩士 / 中國文化大學 / 音樂研究所 / 94 / The most representative variation forms of Baroque period were Chaccone and Passacaglia—two dance forms.; variations form during Classical Period was mostly standard “Tema con variazioni”, with a high level of consistency kept throughout a piece of music. Up to the Romantic Period in the 19th century, composers treated,the structure,key,harmony and rhythm of variation form with greater freedom and creativity.
“Variations” have traditionally been one of the technique by which music can be continued and developed. In the evolution of Western music history, musical variations have changed from a pure skill to an elaborated structure . In this essay, the author chooses “Harmonious Blacksmith Keyboard Variations” of Handel, “Keyboard Variations in F Minor Hob.XVII:6” of Haydn, and “Variations Brillante OP.12 Keyboard Variations” of Chopin as the major scope of discussion. First of all, the most representative variation techniques from Baroque and Classical to Romantic Periods will be described, then the characteristics and variation technique of the three above mentioned would be analyzed one by one.Also,the author tried to combine theories with performance practice.In conclusion, the essay is divided into six chapters: Chapter 1, introduction; Chapter 2, overview of keyboard variations; Chapter 3, Keyboard Variations Harmonious Blacksmith of Handel; Chapter 4, Variations in F Minor of Haydn; Chapter 5,Variations Brillantes op.12
