碩士 / 中國文化大學 / 應用化學研究所 / 93 / The fresh stems of Euphorbia tirucalli L. were collected from Ping-Tung, Taiwan. It has been used as a folk medicine for treatment of the dermatosis, and pains of the human body paralysis. In earlier studies, the latex of E. tirucalli is known to be poisonous, and some phorbol esters isolated from E. tirucalli were shown to possess toxic tumor-promoting activity. However, recent reports showed that some of phorbol esters were very effective antiviral agents. Therefore, we tried to isolate the components from the E. tirucalli and evaluate their biological activities. Eleven compounds were isolated from the ethanol extract of the fresh stems of E. tirucalli including phaeophorbid-a ethyl ester, 132-hydroxy- phaeophorbid-a ethyl ester, phaeophorbid-b ethyl ester, ethyl gallate, β-amyrone, glutinone, taraxerone, friedelin, glutinol, euphol, and ET-EA-1-2-5. Their structures were characterized by MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR analyses and the spectroscopic data obtained were compared with those reported in the literature. Among them, ET-EA-1-2-5 is a new compound.
