Socialist construction of suburban in Shanghai, 1949-1978 / 解放後至改革開放前上海城郊的社會主義營造過程

碩士 / 東海大學 / 建築學系 / 93 / This paper examined the correspondence between the planned economy system and the spatial practice in suburban Shanghai following time by the urbanization process during the socialist era from 1949-78.Trying to analyze the state interventions towards spatial practice under socialistic ideology, the paper attempted to understand the inner conflict between socialistic city model and physical spatial construction by the socialistic policy, system, and institution.
The paper first reviewed how did socialistic ideology affect the urban development policy under China’s planned economy system from 1949 to1978 and then point out how did socialistic ideal model be limited just within suburban and newly built industrial area. Focusing on the socialistic ideology, state policy and urban construction, the paper then narrowed its spatial scope to discuss the planning and spatial practice of the socialist urban strategies in Shanghai diachronically and synchronically.
Through analytical study, the paper concluded that: as housing were assumed to be “non-productive” and were not appraised by the state due to socialist heavy-industry-inclined policies, investments of housing were delayed and had the collective consumption of housing been inadequate over a long period of time. It also had the labors’ reproduction obstructed and industry output value unable to increase. With the industry-inclined policies prevailing, the city's territory expanded and the dream of urban-and-rural-united failed. Execution of Household Registration Regulation and state's monopoly on the purchasing and marketing system by far intensified the opposing structure between urban and rural areas and had the spatial practice of socialist ideology deviated form the socialistic urban model gradually.
Being assumed as alternatives for urban governance, socialist urban development in Shanghai were testified unable to be the appropriate amelioration for urban crisis caused by capital accumulation and deprivation. Through the empirical studies form this paper, powerful state and mighty state intervention demonstrated not to be the ideal way for cities confronted urban problems in developing.
