碩士 / 逢甲大學 / 環境工程與科學所 / 94 / Taichung Harbor is the only international harbor in central Taiwan. Only one entrance makes the shipping management of the huge port quite uneasy. So they undergo construction of widening the port entrance together with the extension of the north breakwater for 1330 meters in 2002. Besides, it is proposed to construct a second entrance in the future to improve the crowded traffic in the harbor. Recently, Chinese Petroleum Corporation and Taiwan Fertilizer Company are to set up their factories in the west bank of Taichung Harbor. Many construction projects are proposed to be carried out, however, it is not easy to disperse in such a semi-closed harbor, especially in the southern part where pollutants are accumulated. Should it be worse after these constructions? Could it be examined before hand?
The harmonic analysis was utilized to calculate the tidal elevation. Continuity and momentum equations were solved instantaneously to set up the hydrodynamic model in Taichung Harbor. Then, the modified ADI method was used to compute the hydrodynamic condition of the flow field. Switching techniques were designed to solve the sea-land exchanging problem in the unconstructed area. Dispersion model is established base on mass balance and Up Wind Method. After verification, the model was applied to simulate the flow field and the water quality in each of the following cases: extension of the north breakwater, increasing pumping of the cooling water, stopping the inflow of An-liang-kang channel and developing the second entrance of the harbor. Finally, effect index (EI) was used to assess the improving effect in all cases.
The results show that stopping the inflow of An-liang-kang channel is the most effective method to improve water quality in the southern part of the harbor, and is herein highly recommended. To develop the second entrance is effective in improving water quality in the southern part, but it results in increasing the pollution in the northern part, thus leads to an overall increase in the harbor. Therefore it is suggested to process a detailed assessment before developing second entrance in the future. EI value works well in indicating the improving effect of water quality in the harbor under every engineering cases, thus provide the harbor master with an useful tool to manage harbor environment. It is also suggested that the BOD concentration of Wu-chi channel and An-liang-kang channel should be reduced to 39.3mg/L and 11.28mg/L, respectively, to keep the averaged BOD concentration less than 2.0mg/L.
