碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 漁業生產與管理研究所 / 94 / The ornamental fish industry in Taiwan nowadays can provide
recreation and education, and embellish our living environment. From the
perspective of management, the features of ornamental fish industry
include low investment risk and high per unit profit. The research was
initiated with a review of literature and some interviews. The information
obtained from these sources was used to develop a survey instrument. The
basic statistics of import and export data, the current business status of the
aquarium, a survey of consumer behavior, and SWOT (Strength, Weakness,
Opportunity and Treat) analysis were used to develop a business operation
model and to provide a feasible scheme for the government in terms of
management and administration in the ornamental fish industry.
The study results are the following:
(1) The ornamental fish industry in Taiwan is export-oriented. The
strengths including professional aquaculture technique, the ability to
breed novel species, and the fact that Taiwan is a transportation hub fit
the needs to develop a delicate fish industry in Taiwan.
(2) Comparing business situations of traditional aquarium and
combination aquarium, the combination aquarium is at an advantageous
position. From the customer satisfaction comparison between the
traditional and the combination aquariums, customers are inclined to
consume the combination aquariums. As a result, the combination
aquariums become the mainstream of the recreation industry in Taiwan.
(3) The weaknesses of the ornamental fish industry are the aging
workforce, the decreasing numbers of workforce with related degrees,
the indeterminacy of legal regulation, the intense competition with the
international market, and the lack of an integral plan for industry
development.
(4) Most companies in the ornamental fish industry belong to individuals
without guidance and assistance from the integral industrial plan
developed by related authority. For long term development, the owners
can modify their strategy, and the government can integrate production
with distribution and develop a plan to integrate government, academia
and industry for future development of the ornamental fish industry.
The ornamental fish industry is skill-intensive and a good workforce is
difficult to be trained. Hopefully this study can provide some useful
information for the government to integrate government, academia and
industry and develop regulation for industry development. By means of
establishing a better environment, this can attract more work forces and create a global marketing opportunity.
