碩士 / 國立臺中教育大學 / 早期療育研究所 / 94 / This research is to investigate why families, in the case of early child developmental delay, refuse early intervention or halt it prematurely. Furthermore the research will also source opinions from medical staff as to why they feel families refuse or prematurely stop early intervention.
The subject pool of the research comes from Miao Li district's 46(53%) families which refused early intervention as well as 6(86%) case managers. The two main tools used in the research are surveys and interviews, which are focused on factors internal and external to the affected families. The five main groups involved are the affected children, parents and family members as well as the providers of early intervention and the relevant case managers.
The results of the research indicate that the probability of families halting treatment prematurely is the highest during the assessment(54%) and therapeutic(34%) phases. The reasons why families are refuse early intervention include the busy schedules of parents, parents believing that their children are actually fine as well as insufficient manpower at home to assist with the early intervention. In the case of families halting treatment prematurely, the main reasons cited are time constraint, lack of manpower, transportation difficulties as well as the long traveling distance between homes and treatment centers.
Based on the findings, appropriate recommendations will be offered to the providers of early intervention as well as the families which refuse early intervention.
For future research, it can be suggested that the reasons causing families to prematurely halt early intervention or to refuse to do it completely be compared and analyzed.
