This paper is an exploratory study on fishery research fellows' tacit knowledge sharing behaviors at the Fisheries Research Institute in Taiwan. The goals of the project are: to analyze research fellows' tacit knowledge sharing behaviors in the academic communities; to understand the current state of research fellows' tacit knowledge sharing behaviors: and to enhance services provided by fishery research libraries based on findings from the project.
The investigator interviewed 16 research fellows from different departments at
the Institute. Answers from the interviewees were examined and analyzed with the
interviewees' relevant work documents such as laboratory diaries and project notes. The data analysis was presented in three areas: the relationship between
research fellows' tacit knowledge sharing behaviors and scholarly communication;
current state of research fellows' tacit knowledge sharing behaviors; and new services
at fishery research libraries.
The findings of this project show that: fishery research fellows prefer to, First, the tacit knowledge dissemination of fisheries research fellow is primarily by the direct communication; Second, the tacit knowledge of fisheries researcher is belongs to the specialized practice of the scene knowledge; Third, the unofficial knowledge providers were include the colleagues in the fishery field, professors, graduate students, fishermen, and fishery industries; Fourth, the most fisheries researchers were willing to participate in academic activity ; Fifth, currently, system, group, and personal contact are the ways to share tacit knowledge through researchers in Fisheries Research Institute; Sixth, the difference of the specialized knowledge of the fisheries research fellows is because of hierarchy; Seventh, the Fisheries Research Institute lacks of formal and organized communication to apparent tacit knowledge; Eighth, creating some dedicated workshops which bring together researchers from similar groups throughout the Fisheries Research Institute and have them share their experiences and knowledge are need.; Ninth, the library of the Fisheries Research Institute is the principal information medium between researchers and the books; the last one is that the Fisheries Research Institute library could act as a knowledge center to provide integrity service for research fellows.
Finally, synthetic study obtained, the researcher to the Fisheries Research Institute, the domestic scientific research institution, as well as the respective library role, proposed further studies the direction the suggestion.
