The present study attempts to understand the magititude and the pattern of marine biodiversity in the tropical islands of the Philippines. In the “Panglao 2004”expedition to the Panglao island of Cebu, benthic megafauna were sampled by 10 methods ( i.e., trawling, hand collecting, tangle net, lumun lumun, suction pump, scuba diving, dredging, brushing, trap, grab ) at 354 stations in 15000 ha and 7 suborders, 29 families, 129 genera, 412 species of shrimps and lobsters were collected. Most species are rare, 72 % of the species with lass than 5 specimens collected and 65 % of the species found in one station only. Trawling is the best collecting method but at least 5 collecting methods ( i.e., trawling, brushing, hand collecting, suction pump, scuba diving ) for collecting 80.3 % of the species shound be used.
