This study is to compare the monitoring effectiveness of fish assemblages between traditional underwater census by divers and remote controlled underwater video camera recording at the Wan-an warship reef installed at Shih-cheng in Yi-lan county, These comparative studies included between day-and-night different faunas and among monitoring methods. A total of 5 field works were carried out during July 2005 to May 2006. Among all 100 hours long video recordings tapes including day and night images, we chose only those video tapes with the same observing hours by using scuba diving in order to make fair comparisons.
After one year of suveying, we have found the following conclusions:
1. Totally 28 families and 56 species of fishes were recorded. Although our survey time was limited, the nocturnal fish composition was the first time to be recorded in Taiwan.
2. The five most dominant fish species at warship reef are: Apogon
semilineatus,, Parapristipoma trilineatum, Chromisnotata, Pseudanthias squamipinnis,Selaroides sp. .Cardinalfishes (Apogon semilineatus) has the greatest individual number. They appeared every day and night, sometimes more than 10,000 individual were observed. Next dominant species was Three-line grunt (Parapristipoma trilineatum) which occurred every time in around 200 individuals which demonstrate that the warship is also useful for attracting and incubate the fishery resources.
3. There were 48 species recorded by scuba divers in daytime in which 18 species have not been observed by remote camera. On the contrarily, there were 32 species including: Sphyraena flavicauda, Spratelloides gracilis, Abudefduf septemfasciatus three species etc.had not been recorded by scuba divers. This also indicated that only one set of remoted camera was not enough due to limited observing area.
4. There were 21 species recorded by remoted camera in which only 3 species were observed in the evening time. They were: Carangoides sp., Taeniura meyeni, Trichiurus lepturus, all belong to semi-resident or visitors. Additionally, school of anchovies was observed in 27th August, 2005 in the evening. This species should be attracted by light.
5. Remoted camera also observed the habitat changing behaviour between diurnal and nocturnal reef fishes of damselfishes and cardinalfishes. In addition, more than 2000 clupeids schooling that attracted lionfish hunting them and feeding them.Mating behaviour of cardinalfish in the reef area were also observed. Not only it implied the evening fauna is worthwhile to do further studies, but also indicated that the warship do have the artificial effectiveness to nurse reef fis resources.
