  The first chapter of this thesis starts with the presentation of Taiwan/ocean images in the literary works during the Ching-ruling period. Discuss the standpoints about ocean and the ocean experience in every period in Taiwan history, trying to find the explanation of ocean images in ocean literature in every period, especially the obscure effect of elements of oceanic civilization in the developing context of Taiwan history, also the significance and meanings of the word “ocean” in every period of Taiwan history. Second, conclude the developing context and culture construction of Taiwan ocean literature. From the concrete presentation of historic characters and ocean culture of interpretation of “ocean” in ocean literature, I will analyze and discuss what kind of impacts of ocean culture have developed between “ocean of past” and “ocean of present” from the angle of literature. Third, from the development of ocean culture, I will manifest the progress of how oceanic views become Taiwan consciousness, then become one part of Taiwan culture in ocean literature.
  The second chapter discusses the meanings and development of “ocean” in different periods in Taiwan, from the four timing which are the Ching-ruling period、the Japanese-ruling period、the post-war period and after the abolishment of the martial law till now. On one hand, mark the time coordinate of “ocean” in Taiwan history, on the other hand, also present the cultural space of “ocean” in Taiwan literature. In the third chapter, inherit the standpoints of history and culture from the last chapter, analyze and discuss how the combination of people and land puts into effect in the creation consciousness of Taiwan literature, from “reportage”. “nature literature” to “ocean literature”, and how author and people enlarge the view from “country-land” to “Taiwan”, during Taiwan modern social movement and democracy development.
  The fifth chapter starts with Taiwan modern ocean literature, divided into six sections, are “ocean of cetacean”, “ocean of fishers”, “ocean of navy”, “ocean of women”, “ocean of originality”, “ocean of history.”I will gradually interpretation how “ocean” transforms itself, from external meaning of environmental consciousness and ecological protection to the assignment of “nation-state history” writing. In sixth chapter makes a further discussion of the cultural meaning of ocean literature, and illustrates how it becomes ocean culture. In the meantime, make a description of how “ocean culture” becomes the power of constructing “island-nation Taiwan.” The seventh chapter makes a conclusion to sum up that ocean literature and ocean culture “represent” oceanic spirits that can attribute Taiwan culture through “ocean.”
