Hypothermic Effects of Rubbing Alcohol on the Morphological Alteration of Hippocampus in Heatstroke-Induced SD Rat. / 酒精擦拭低溫效應對熱中風大白鼠海馬回的形態變化

碩士 / 國立陽明大學 / 解剖暨細胞生物學研究所 / 94 / Heatstroke-induced neuronal damage resulted from the lower perfusion of cerebral flow. We attempted to ascertain whether hypothermia attenuated the heatstroke-induced insult. Urethane-anesthetized Spraque Dawley rats were exposed to the ambient temperature of 45 0C in a heat box until mean arterial pressure (MAP) began to decrease form the peak, which was defined as the onset of heatstroke. Hypothermia was accomplished by rubbing alcohol (20 min) in the ventral surface of the rats. The animals exposed to 250C served as the normothermic controls. The results revealed that the duration of the heatstroke induction is 90.2±6.9 minutes. Animals displayed hyperthermia and lower values of mean arterial pressure (hypotension) at the onset of heatstroke in compared with normothermic controls. Morphological investigation under the light microscope level, intensely toludine-blue stained cells and GFAP-like immunoreactivity markedly increased in the dente gyrus and CA4 sector of the hippocampus. Rreactive astrocytes extended their cytoplasmic processes interposed in the pyramidal cell and the granular cell. The present data suggests that astrocyte may be involved in the protection of neuron in heatstroke rats. Furthermore, our results revealed that hypothermia by rubbing alcohol recovered partially the mean arterial pressure (hypotension). In addition, hypothermia reduced heatstroke-induced ischemia, neuron damage and GFAP-like immunoreactivity as well as prolonged the survival time in the heatstroke-induced rats. In conclusion, hyperthermia may probably reinforce and maintain the survival of the neuron as well as protect and attenuate the cellular degeneration and death.
