Though the space layout of a house type may display various appearance, it can perform a harmonious order within diversity. The space layout of the traditional house type shows diferences under a common theme which can provide diversity. However, there exists an obvious common structure in diversity. Among the houses in Chiayi Coast Area, there is a typical layout of “One house with 11 rooms”. However, because of the outer factors, it can only meet basic living needs in that time when the house was built. It will grow when there are changes in number of family members, living needs and economic growth.
The growth of type at Chiayi Coastal Area includes generation model and addition model. When people do not need large-scale growth or the increase of space demand is aiming at individual space, The generation model which tremendously increases space would not be adopted. people will implement micro-adjustment with The addition model which increases space slightly will be implemented. The addition model reflects the changes of living style and increasing spatial needs, and maintains the spatial structure, performs multiple potentials. It can enrich the overall form and may breed new types.
Because the differentiation between the generation model and the addition model is not clear, this research compares the differences in house features through description and analysis in a typological point of view three theoretical models are raised according to description results, to define the models of generation and addition, and to construct the logic of typological growth, which has ability in comprehending and predicting the phenomena house addition in this area.
Finally, based on the hypothesis, space and construction of house addition are analysed, the logic of house addition is deduced, and the limit of addition is thus explored.
