The symbolic study of Chinese hydrosphere divine creatures: Case study of Fish, Tortoise, Serpent, Dragon in “Tai Pin Guan Chi” / 中國水界神異動物象徵研究──以《太平廣記》魚、龜、蛇、龍為例

The kernel issue of this study is: Why the primitive people regard hydrosphere divine creatures as worship objects? What the implications they symbolize? How change has this symbolic implications become in later generations.
The first chapter ”Introduction”, explain the motive and purpose of study, review related research results, then establish the research scope and technique of this study.
The second chapter”the primitive witchcraft and totem beliefs in “Shan Hai Jing”, defines the concepts of primitive witchcraft and totem beliefs firstly, then traces the source of hydrosphere divine creatures’ primitive image and symbolic implication in “Shan Hai Jing”. Secondly, this study discusses the “Tai Pin Guan Chi” stories of hydrosphere divine creatures in two parts, real or not. Comparing to fish, serpent and tortoise, the Chinese totem representative--- dragon, combined many animals’ image. Therefore, it’s necessary to discuss “dragon” independently.
The third chapter ”The contents and thoughts in Chinese fish, tortoise and serpent stories” , take fish, tortoise and serpent---these real creatures, as the discussion object. This chapter contains three issues: demonstrating strange prefigurations, explaining Buddhism and Daoism, changing phenomenon.
The forth chapter” The contents and thoughts in Chinese dragon”, explained the relation between Chinese arethusa and Indian dragon firstly. Secondly, we analyze it in different story types: dragon palace traveling and the marriage of dragon’s princess. The fifth chapter is ”Conclusion”.
