The physical properties of sand dunes-Nangang coast in Hsinchu / 沙丘性質調查-新竹南港海岸

The coast line is long in Taiwan. It will influence the social and economic action when it was erosion. And sand dunes are important surface feature which can be protect the coast. So it is important to protect sand dunes. In this study, the investigate area is at Nangang coast in Hsinchu. It includes that investigate the physical properties of sand dunes, character of sand dunes take shape and result of sand fixation.
In this area, it differentiate three section, mudbank, grassy marsh and artificial generated sand dune. According to the result of sieve analysis. It show that the character of sand in the investigate area, (1) The grading of the Wentworth,s type is only one kind of sand, (2)the relationship between sand particle size and level position is small, (3)wash and select is bad, (4)the majority are particulate. The major motive force in mudbank section and grassy marsh section is flow along the coast. The major motive force in artificial generated sand dune is wind-force. Above ground surface 10 centimeter, the maximum of water content is 0.88 percent. It becomes flying sand easily by wind-force. Below ground surface 30 centimeter, the water content maintain above 4 percent.
In the area, the sand hedges have northern 30° western trend. The sand spines of every sand hedge are almost vertical to the sand hedge. The sand hedge separating areas label as Zone I, Zone II and Zone III. It measured from July 2005 to June 2006. Typhoon and monsoon influence in Zone I. The volume of sand dunes increased to 231(m3/m) and 209(m3/m) in September and December respectively. And Zone II and Zone III influenced by wave and monsoon. It cause that the volume of sand dunes decreased to 164(m3/m) and 158(m3/m) in April and May.
