碩士 / 朝陽科技大學 / 設計研究所 / 95 / More and more portable electronic products are using small display screens and navigation scroll wheels for means of controlling the device itself; this makes usability and the interface become very important design factors. This research utilizes the NOKIA 7280 and 7380 to conduct experiments. The research goals include: (1) Evaluation of navigation scroll wheel button usability; (2) Evaluation of cognition of information placement in the small display screen; (3) Improving the correlation of control between the navigation scroll wheel and the information placement.
In Chapter three, existing phones was used to test navigation scroll wheels and to evaluate the usability and cognition toward information placement in the small display screen. The experiment results indicated that: the 7280 interface is different from most cell phones, it can be hard to maneuver during the initial phase of use. In Chapter five, we used Rapid to built simulation model of menus and navigation scroll wheels for the original NOKIA 7380 interface and a improved design. They were then compared with each other; we found that the improved interface took less time in executing typical tasks.
This research found that: (1) Usability was enhanced during the use of the navigation scroll wheel, the controlling time of the navigation scroll wheel and characteristic of the interface is related to the response time of the device; (2)The menu items should be arranged according to their functional frequency of usage; (3) Screen should be a longitudinally placed rectangle or square, or it should be a rectangular narrow screen with the long side placed down, while the data should be displayed from left to right and from top to bottom for ease of cognition; (4) Users prefer large sized longitudinally placed screens and like to have data of same sorts arranged together; the data that is arranged in a semi-circle within the narrow screen would be better if it were displayed longitudinally in a list-like form .
