The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, interests and behavior about aromatherapy and to discover the overall stress level of nurses. Nursing staffs within a medical center in central part of Taiwan were collected, cross-sectional and correlational design were used in this study. A structural questionnaire was given to 400 nurses. 352 out of 400 were valid and the response rate was 88%. The data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistical methods including maximum, minimum, mean, percentage and standard deviation. Deductive statistical methods including T-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and Scheffe’s method.
The results showed (1) The score of Knowledge about aromatherapy was 14.6±5.5 with a correct rate of 56%. (Total scores: 24)；(2) The score of Attitude toward aromatherapy was 44.9±7.3 (Total scores: 60)；(3) Behavior of using aromatherapy showed positive correlated with their interest (p<0.05). (4) Pursuit of aromatherapy was correlated with pressure level Knowledge and Attitude toward aromatherapy. (p<0.05) The knowledge of aromatherapy, the source of the knowledge and the interest in aromatherapy were noted to influence the attitudes towards aromatherapy. But the behavior of using aromatherapy was affected by the interest in aromatherapy only. This study showed the knowledge of aromatherapy is important to clinical nursing staffs. It provides references of patient care and helps the patients seek for proper complementary treatment so as to improve the quality of patients’ hospital stay. Larger sample size and various sample sources were recommended along with evaluating the need of aromatherapy, experience of using aromatherapy, and impact factors in general population. Conferences, symposiums, and continuous education programs should be arranged for further improving nursing staffs’ knowledge of aromatherapy.
