An Analysis of Operating Performance in Shipping Industry with Financial Ratios / 應用財務比率分析海運業經營績效之研究

碩士 / 銘傳大學 / 國際企業學系碩士在職專班 / 95 / Now Shipping Industry faces on weaker freight rates and steeply rising cost that affect operating performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study will analyze the main factor and correlation which affect operating performance with financial ratios and economic environment variables in Shipping Industry for manager reference.
This study will choice 11 carriers from among the top 30 regular line carriers by Barry Rogliano Salles Shipbrokers announced in 2006 and 5 carriers from among the public irregular line carriers listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. We will analyze regular line and irregular line for operating performance whether there are some obvious differences. According to 16 carriers’ financial report from 2001 to 2005, this study will take 16 financial ratios each year as be variable and adopt the Principle Component Analysis to extract five criterias and add two economic environment variables as independent variables. And the Return on Assets, Return on Equity and Pre-tax Profit will be as dependent variables. Finally, this study will adopt Multiple Regression Analysis to verify the result. The results are listed as below:
1. The operating performance of regular line carrier appears to positive correlation with “Short-term financial obligations”、“Growing capability”、“Steadily”、“World GDP Growth Rate” and negative correlation with “Activity Efficiency”.
2. The operating performance of irregular line carrier appears to positive correlation with “Activity Efficiency”、“Growing capability” and“World GDP Growth Rate”.
