Airline Network Design with Concave Arc Cost Functions / 考量節線凹型運輸成本函數之航空路網規劃

Because Hub-and-Spoke system can keep lower operation costs and largely reduces the complexity of network structure. Therefore, airline network design become one of the most vital issues to airline industry. A characteristic feature of hub and spoke is the bundling of flows on the interhub links. This agglomeration of flows leads to reduces travel costs across the interhub links. Current models of hub locations do not adequately model the scale economies of flow that accure due to the agglomeration of flows. Because current model assume flow-independent costs, not only miscalculate total network costs, but may also erroneously select optimal hub locations and allocations. So this research explicity models the scale economies with flow-dependent concave cost function and provides a more reliable model representation of the reality of hub and spoke networks.
This model also considering the seasonal demand variations. In real word cases, air passenger demand is unstable because air passenger volume usually fluctuates with seasonal changes. In order to solve demand uncertainty problem, this research formulated stochastic programming model for airline network design. The stochastic model can provide best decision on hub allocation under different demand situation, and different route structures suit different demand levels also proposed.
This research objective function which minimizes the total costs. The objective contains four terms. The first term is the fixed cost for the spoke links. The second term is the fixed for setup hubs. The third term is the transport cost. The fourth term is incurred extra cost when the served flow is over the capacity. The commercial modeling software GAMS in conjunction with the optimization solver are employed to solve the problem. Finally, case study using the virtual and cross-strait air transport network to perform the model.
