碩士 / 國防醫學院 / 公共衛生學研究所 / 95 / It has been noted that smoking is harmful to health, in particular, via the tolerance and dependence of nicotine. Many studies indicate that physical and mental disorders of smokers is associated with nicotine dependence. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the magnitude of nicotine dependence and subsequent health effects among Navy conscripts with cigarette smoking habits. This cross-sectional study surveyed 398 officers and conscripts of Navy submarines and basic trainees in southern Taiwan between September 2004 and December 2004. The results revealed that prevalence of moderate and severe nicotine dependence among smoking officers and conscripts on submarines and in basic traninees was 35.3% and 33.8%, respectively. After controlling the confounding effects of age, military rank, education and marriage status, the results showed that risk of moderate and severe nicotine dependence among smokers was increased in parallel to the increasing in scores of somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism. Prospective follow-up studies to investigate causal relationship between physical and mental disorders and nicotine dependence are needed in the future.
