The organotin compounds are known endocrine disruptor chemicals that may through the food chain into human body by Bioaccumulation, them to affect the human health. This study are to investigate the concentration of butyltins (MBT,DBT,TBT) in biota and different sediment particles from Kaohsiung Chijin harbor areas. By this investigation to assess the level of pollution and risk of butyltins in biota and sediment by the statistic correction analysis, bio-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF), butyltin degradation index (BDI) and Hazard index (HI).
Results showed the average concentrations of butyltins in sediment are MBT 212 ng/g dry, DBT 553 ng/g dry, TBT 892 ng/g dry. The values of Butyl degradation index (BDI) is higher than 1 both in biota and sediment. This was showed that degradation in biota and sediment was high level. And bio-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) was lower than 0.9 showed that the butyltins in biota was come from the sediment. It’s Hazard index (HI) showed that if people eat the benthos of harbor area was no risks.
In Taiwan, the use of antifouling paint in small-scale ship (less than24 meter) has already been forbidden for years because it contains toxic TBT content. Nevertheless, this study revealed that the concentration of Butyltins in the Kaohsiung Chijin harbor areas still keep in a high level. Thus, continuous tracking and further investigation the butyltin distribution and accumulation characteristics is deem necessary in the future work. The results of this study can provide a base-line data for developing stratagems for pollution control and sediment remediation of harbor estuaries.
