碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 95 / The Ophichthidae within Anguilliformes not only is the largest family, but also the highest group on species diversity, amounting to no less than 290 species on earth. The snake eels occur mainly in subtropical or tropical area. They are benthic fishes and well-known burrowers spending most of their daytime in the bottom. They are usually caught by bottom trawl and bottom long-line fisheries. This study classified the snake eels caught from Eastern Taiwan waters northerly from Daxi harbor, Hualien, Shiti, Changbin to Chengkong southerly. Meanwhile, we visited museums to check some uncommon specimens, examining some living snake eels vended in the market to clarify the species that were previously misidentified and doubted.
Taiwan’s studies about the snake eels were rare and incomplete formerly. The thesis has recognized 2 subfamilies, 12 genera, and 20 species of the snake eels from Eastern Taiwan waters, including 3 newly recorded genus: Neenchelys, Apterichtus, and Echelus; 6 newly recorded species: Muraenichthys macropterus, Neenchelys daedalus, Apterichtus moseri, Brachysomophis henshawi, Echelus uropterus, and Ophichthus asakusae; as well as one newly described species: Brachysomophis chioui. This new species is characterized by a combination of the following features: brownish olive dorsally, minute gray wrinkles distributing along body obviously, barbels absent, median fins with dark margins and brown bands on each side of base, pectoral fins black, and total vertebrae 126. After our reviewing, the total number of the Ophichthidae from Taiwan will increase to 17 genera and 35 species.
In the thesis, in addition to the keys to genera and species belonging to Ophichthidae existing off shore along the coast of Eastern Taiwan, the descriptions of each subfamily, the synonym lists, the diagnoses, as well as their color pictures and dentition diagrams were provided for further research and reference.
