Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different dietary vitamin E levels and carotenoids on the growth and body composition of cobia, Rachycentron canadum. In the first trial, four isoenergetic and isonitrogenous semi-purified diets with α-tocopherol levels, ranging from 0 to 0.15 g/Kg α-tocopherol in 0.05 g/Kg increaments were evaluated that began with 4.54±0.08g cobia. The experiment period was eight weeks. Cobia fed diet added 0.15 g/Kg α-tocopherol had significantly higher weight gain than those fed diets without α-tocopherol. The cobia fed diet added 0.15 g/Kg α-tocopherol had significantly higher crude lipid of muscle tissue and liver than those fed other treatments. The concentrations of α-tocopherol of cobia liver fed diets added 0.1 and 0.15 g/Kg α-tocopherol were 4.47 and 4.43 mg/Kg, respectively. There was no α-tocopherol deposited in the muscle tissue of cobia fed all treatments.
In the second trial, four isoenergetic and isonitrogenous semi-purified diets with α-tocopherol levels, ranging from 0 to 0.3 g/Kg α-tocopherol in 0.1 g/Kg increaments were evaluated that began with 3.45±0.37g cobia. The experiment period was eight weeks. Cobia fed diet added 0.1 g/Kg α-tocopherol had significantly higher weight gain than those fed diets added 0.2 g/Kg α-tocopherol. The concentrations of α-tocopherol of cobia liver fed diets added 0.3 g/Kg α-tocopherol was 2.63 mg/Kg. The cobia fed other levels of α-tocopherol did not deposit on the liver tissue of cobia. There was no α-tocopherol deposited in the muscle tissue of cobia fed all treatments.
In the third trial, four semi-purified diets with a mixture of 2:1 fish oil / corn oil contained different carotenoids(β-carotene, Rose red, astaxanthin) were evaluated that began with 4.14±0.27g cobia. The experiment period was eight weeks. Cobia fed diet containing astaxanthin had higher weight gain, but cobia fed these diets did not show any significant differences. Cobia fed diet containing astaxanthin had higher crude lipid in the muscle and liver than those fed other treatments. The carotenoid concentrations of cobia muscle were less than 1 mg/Kg and there was no α-tocopherol deposited in the muscle tissue of cobia fed all treatments.
