In view of high operational costs involved, it is important to provide a set of rules for preventing disputes arising from the provision and calculation of laytime, the payment of demurrage charges, etc. In fact, laytime disputes have become the most common problems in voyage charterparty practices. It is therefore necessary to explore the nature of laytime, the relationship between laytime and demurrage charges, dispatch money, etc. This thesis discusses the definition of laytime, the commencement of laytime, and the calculation. It also uses two cases as examples to show the rules for solving relevant problems arising from voyage charterparty. This thesis analyzes the above issues according to the rules and judgments set up by judicial cases, arbitration awards, and shipping practices and custom. It shows the relationships between laytime clauses and the established rules. This thesis aims to provide reference to those persons engaging in tramp shipping while dealing whit laytime issues.
