Abstract
In the past, the people in the neighboring sea of China invite Taoists to pray for peacefulness and expel plagues and let colorful ships float on the sea so that the people in Taiwan located by east-southern sea find lots of ships, and gradually it becomes special customs of Taiwanese by sea. The Wangye, which is made for expelling plagues and floated to Taiwan becomes more and more local, and its image transforms from the plague-expelling god into the navigating god, and then medicine god, finally guard god.
Nowadays, in the south of Taiwan, the god-welcome ceremony becomes more prosperous. In the past, many researchers focused on the introduction of plague-expelling ceremony, the religion part, but for religion ceremony, the memory for an area is more important. Thus, how come the religion for the ships keeps and develops in the modern times and attracts so many researchers? This is a good question.
The area of Yulin and Chiayi was an early developed place, and then pioneers go to Taiwan by sea and face lots of difficulties. The ancestors who went across the strait far from Fujian and Kunangtung search difficultly for water lands for planting in Taiwan and inhabitate here. With the development by ancestors, their relatives and offsprings got together and become clans or tribes. The pioneers going to Taiwan bring their gods for peacefulness, so after the form of the tribes, people built temples for praying their gods. The activity kept on in the new area because of the development of praying ceremonies by the local temples.
The religion of Wangye was vigorous in the Yulin-Chiayi area, and there was a special religion ceremony, called welcome guests or ask for replacement. Many ceremonies were held in the Yulin-Chiayi area and arranged with god birthday, praying, ask for peacefulness, and then welcom guests. People would wait for guests by sea or rivers and welcome them to village temples for praying. In a periood of time, people in some places would make ships for guests and see them out.
Through the survey of Yulin-Chiayi areas, we found the inhabitants’ different religion levels:in the tribe ceremonies, where they would welcom Wangye, where they would welcome gods to the villages. The gods from other places were called guest gods so there were three different ranks and clans, locals, visitors, and guests.
The religion of Wangye and the immigration of the tribes are related. The land in the Yulin-Chiayi area is very infertile and many indigenous people move to the city, so the custom is brought new places. We try to discuss the pioneers’ religion and common memories from the twice immigration inland.
The study tries to explain the religion for Wangye in the Yulin-Chiayi area from the above views.
