of interviews of 12 senior sea fishing leisured persons and the questionnaire survey of people who had participated sea fishing leisure activities in the Chiayi-Tainan coastal area. It aims to explore the relationship between personal background, sea fishing experiences, characteristics of personality and leisure perceived freedom among the sea fishing leisured people.
Adopting purposive sampling and convenience sampling methods in quantitative research, we issued total 400 questionnaires. The effective questionnaires were 205, the return rate was 51.25%. The analytical methods include descriptive statistics and analyses, exploratory factor analysis, reliability test, t test, One-Way ANOVA, Scheffe’s Post-Hoc Multiple Comparisons and Pearson Correlation Analysis.
In qualitative research, we adopted half-structured interview method. We found that the external factors for the sea fishing leisured people to participate in the sea fishing leisure activities were friends, dwelling places, climate, occupation, rules, family, custom, etc. The reasons were interest, pressure release, enjoying nature, correct bad customs. The limits were environment, fishing resources, weather situation, healthy and economic problems. On the experience of freedom sense, the sea fishing leisure people could use their skills, experiences and motivation to overcome the difficulties and challenges in the sea fishing leisure activities. When they had the sense of control in the experiences of sea fishing activities, they will have more freedom sense. The sea fishing activities have become their important part of leisure life. They would feel exciting, and have maximum satisfaction in their psychology if they throw themselves into sea fishing leisure activities.
The major results in the study are as follows:
1. The sea fishing leisure activities have developed rapidly in the Chiayi-Tainan area due to the related ocean policy is open.
2. The major participating types of the sea fishing leisure activities in the Chiayi-Tainan coastal area are: breakwater fishing, beach fishing, raft fishing and boat fishing.
3. The sea fishing leisured people in the Chiayi-Tainan coastal area are mostly men, age 31-40, high school or vocational school graduates, married, with good health condition, working for the transport/warehouse/communication, monthly income NT20,001-40,000 and live mostly in the Chiayi-Tainan coastal area. The time spent in fishing is 3-6 years. The participating times on an average year are 51 times. The money spent for the fishing activities on an average year is over NT50,000. The participating types of the sea fishing are mostly breakwater fishers.
4. Among the characteristics of background of the sea fishing leisured people, the degree of leisure perceived freedom of sea fishing leisured people had significant differences with different genders and dwelling places.
5. The difference between sea fishing activity experiences and leisure perceived freedom: the leisure perceived freedom of sea fishing leisured people had significant difference with the different “spending time” and “participation times”.
6. The relationship between the characteristics and leisure perceived freedom: there was no significant relationship between the characteristics of internal and external locus of control and leisure perceived freedom among the sea fishing leisured people.
