“Perfection & Deficiency” in The Earthsea Cycle / 論《地海傳說》的完美與殘缺

碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 兒童文學研究所 / 96 / In The Earthsea Cycle, Ursula K. Le Guin creates a fantasy world where all kinds of ideal countries, the duplicates of real life world, are built on the Earthsea Islands. The Earthsea Cycle is a narration about deficiency and perfection: boy and sorcerer, girl and archpriest, ordinary people and the son of dragon; a narration that features good and evil, and the quest of selfhood. This paper deals with the relationship of ‘deficiency and perfection’ in The Earthsea Cycle, with respect to the scene of Earthsea, the appearances of City-states, and the way how the leading character becomes a hero.
In the story the origin of Earthsea is like a dream. The dreamer is the author, and the characters of the Earthsea legend are the readers. They influence the existence of Earthsea. Giving the imagery of seas and islands all kinds of interpretations, Le Guin realizes in Earthsea the fantasy in which humans have a grand time on the sea, and mixes real life dreams with the coined Earthsea story.
The main scenes in The Earthsea Cycle are islands named Gont, Roke, Hur-at-hur, and Havnor. Roke is the key place of the story, and Le Guin makes it the duplicate of Utopia, an island of sage and a paradise which people of Earthsea dream of.
The ways how the leading characters in the legend become heroes or heroines are not the same. However, their life experiences correspond with what Joseph Campbell has referred to as the features of heroes or heroines. Characters created by Le Guin grow in sufferings but succeed in their career by fighting with Fate. The form of the story is similar to what Northrop Frye analyzes as the two features of narration: legend and tragedy.
Entering Le Guin’s world, you can witness how the heroes or heroines go through dangers, and how they succeed by overcoming difficulties. This ‘witness’ satisfies people with realization of dreams; moreover, she depicts dreams as reflecting the cruel reality, and therefore ‘witness’ becomes a way of escaping from the cruelty and ugliness of the real world.
