Prediction-Observation-Explanation (POE) is used as a teaching strategy to investigate the circumstances of learning “Acid, Base, and Indicator Concepts”, concept attributes and conceptual changes of “Physical Properties Determination” among the sixth graders in the rural shoreline area of Taipei County. This research was divided into four parts, “characteristics of acid and Base”, “characteristics of Indicator”, “characteristics of Acid and Base Mixtures”, and “Study of Acid and Base in the daily life”.
Two elementary schools rural shoreline area of Taipei County were chosen as samples. Ten students (n=10) of one of the elementary schools was selected to conduct pilot study. The results of this presurveying were organized and determined the Misconceptions of the objects. A Study Form was developed afterwards. Twelve students (n=12) of the other elementary school were received a live-teaching-activities and taught by acid and base of POE studying form for two months.
The references of this research are, Teaching before behind measure the questionnaire. The POE of the student learns the list, The classroom records sound and viedod the data, The meet data of the student, The classroom in the classroom observes and examines the reading notes,And the integrity presents the child to"sour alkali" concept hold of the situation of the viewpoint and the concept change.
Some results were obtained after this research, 1). Students who received a POE teaching strategy performed better in “The acid and base indicates the two stratum tests of a concept evaluation questionnaire” “Characteristics of Acid and Base”, “Characteristics of Acid and Base Mixtures”, “Characteristics of Indicator」, and “Study of Acid and Base in the daily life” than previously; 2). Most students who previously suffered misconceptions were corrected their original concepts and guided to appropriate scientific concepts after POE teaching; 3). The reseacher discovered students’ inner thoughts of the concepts by discussing with them. If these students could be taught with POE teaching once more, their misconceptions will be resolved or changed; 4). POE teaching activity can develop active learning for students. For instance, students worked together to complete a learning course of acid-base indicator in the chapter of Self-Preparation of Acid Base indicator.
