A Study of the Participation Motivation of the High School Rowing Athletes / 中學划船選手運動參與動機之研究

The purposes of this study were: a).to understand the current status of participation in rowing sport for high school students. b). to understand the participation motivation of high school rowing athlete. c). to compare differences in participation motivation among participants with different demographic background.
Questionnaire was used for data collection. The content of the questionnaire includes :a). subject information; b). motivation scale that consists of challenge orientation, competition orientation, victory orientation, and mastery orientation. Subjects are 239 youth rowing athletes from 20 junior high schools and 17 high schools in Taiwan. Two hundreds and forty-six valid copies were obtained with a return rate of 84 percentage. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistic methods, including frequencies, t-test, one-way ANOVA , Scheff’e tests. The main findings were as follows:
1.The order of importance from highest to lowest for participation motivation were : “challenge orientation”, “competition orientation”, ” mastery orientation”, and ” victor tendency”.
2.Demographic variables such as school enrollment, gender, level of academic achievement, time spend in rowing training, and plan for continue participation in rowing differ in participation motivation.
